They Finally Let a Black Person Be ‘The Bachelorette’ After 12 Seasons

Are we singing “We Shall Overcome” yet? Here’s another wall coming down. The Bachelorette cast Rachel Lindsay as its next bachelorette.

Lindsay currently stars in this season’s The Bachelor. This probably means she doesn’t get the last rose this season. Lucky for her because Nick Viall seems a little slow in the head.

Instead, she’ll be the first black person selected to choose from a collection of men dying to become the next big reality star.

From what I’ve seen this season on The Bachelor, she’s way too classy for this show. Maybe they’ll find 30 equally classy guys to win her heart, but knowing reality TV, don’t count on it.

Don’t expect Lindsay to make a big deal about breaking down any barriers.

“I’m happy to represent myself as a black woman in front of America and I’m happy for America to rally behind me and see what it’s like for me to be on this journey to find love,” Lindsay tells PEOPLE. “Honestly, it’s not going to be that different from any other season of The Bachelorette.”

Adding, “I’m obviously nervous and excited to take on this opportunity but I don’t feel added pressure being the first black Bachelorette, because to me I’m just a black woman trying to find love. Yes, I’m doing on this huge stage, but again my journey of love isn’t any different just because my skin color is.”

Yes! So true, but you know…you’re, you know, black. And we still care about that.

If you don’t watch The Bachelor, you can gawk at her Instagram instead.
