Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, a woman with two hyphenated names, won Miss Universe on Sunday night. She was representing South Africa.
I can’t speak about the other women, but I approve of the committee’s choice.
Let’s get to know Ms. Nel-Peters, shall we? Or, you can be a creepo and skim past the text just to look at her pictures.
She’s 22 years old. She doesn’t like HIV or AIDS. She believes that men and women should be paid equally. And, she started a program that trains women in self-defense. Basically, she’s a walking pageant cliché. Here’s what she had to say about feeling empowered:
“You feel so empowered because you are on a stage with 91 other women that are strong, that are independent, that have worked really hard.”
Strong, independent, and worked really hard. Just to be judged by a group of people based on their bodies and their words. How empowering is it to win a contest that Donald Trump owned and made for television?
