Remember when Keira Knightley used to be in more modern movies like The Hole, Bend It Like Beckham, Pirates of the Caribbean but now she’s in period pieces like Pride and Prejudice and Atonement? There’s a reason for that. It’s because she’s tired of all this raping going on with women in contemporary movies.
“I don’t really do films set in the modern day because the female characters nearly always get raped,” she said. “I always find something distasteful in the way women are portrayed, whereas I’ve always found very inspiring characters offered to me in historical pieces.”
Knightley admits there’s been some improvements over the years with stronger female characters and stories. And with female directors, producers and writers, there usually are better parts for women.
Makes sense. I wouldn’t want to get hired just so a bunch of people chewing popcorn can watch me get raped either. Not again.
