Foo Fighters Turn Lisa Loeb’s ‘Stay’ Into Heavy Metal for Hanukkah

When did Dave Grohl become the coolest person in rock? For the start of this year’s Hanukkah, Grohl and The Bird and the Bee’s Greg Kurstin covered Lisa Loeb’s 1994 song “Stay”. Even better, they turned it into a heavy metal version with Grohl lip-syncing in a dress.

Their cover isn’t bad.

Loeb’s “Stay” was the lead song from 1994’s Reality Bites, which I didn’t know. Loeb wrote it about a breakup. I’ve never read “Stay”‘s lyrics:

I get drunk, wake up, I’m wasted still
I realize the time that I wasted here
I feel like you can’t feel the way I feel
Oh, I’ll be fucked up if you can’t be right here

Interesting. Even the history of “Stay” is a bit of nostalgia.

It seems that Loeb wasn’t even signed to a recording contract but was acquainted with Ethan Hawke, who starred in Reality Bites. Hawke passed a tape of the song along to the movie’s director Ben Stiller, who promptly put the song in the movie. Helped by the exposure, the song became the first ever by a literally independent artist to top the Billboard Pop charts.

In 2021, she’d just create a new dance for it on Tik Tok.
